"When the whole world shuts down"

special article by pastor timothy warner

New Year’s Day, upon entering this new decade 2020, nobody even heard of Covid-19.  Today, we hear it spoken of daily from media sources giving us updates on what is called Coronavirus and its effects on American life.  Did you see this shutdown coming?  How are churches and ministries handling the shutdown?  What lessons can we learn?  What does God have to say to His people about matters such as this?  Will we have a new normal when it’s over?  Let’s consider some of these questions.

Prophetic.  There have been some contemporary prophets who have accurately predicted this phenomenon saying that America (and the world) would be greatly affected by a pestilence.  Sid Roth has showcased a few of them, saying that in early 2020,  the USA would be stricken with a virus of some sort.  David Wilkerson prophesied that God showed him a shutdown was coming to America.  There is evidence that he shared with Jerusalem Prayer Team minister, Rev. Mike Evans (in 1986).  Wilkerson writes:  I see a plague coming on the world, and the bars,  churches and government will shut down. The plague will hit New York City and shake it like it has never been shaken. The plague is going to force prayerless believers into radical prayer and into their Bibles, and repentance will be the cry from the man of God in the pulpit. And out of it will come a Third Great Awakening that will sweep America and the world."  Certainly, Jesus prophesied “pestilences” would be signs to encourage saints and warn sinners that things such as this would precede His coming back to earth (Lk 21:11; Mt 24:7).

Production.  What do churches and ministers do when it is “against the law” or “in defiance of” local health departments to assemble together (Sundays and throughout the week)?  A few ministers tried this, but were arrested.  Church production departments of livestreaming, radio recordings, online ministries, etc. must go into high gear.  Many churches were “ready” for this, while others scrambled to make sure they could get the message out by way of the internet.  Some pastors I spoke with said they quickly converted their audio to video production.  Others record praise, preaching, and fire-side chats for people to watch via their website, or YouTube channel.  Most everyone has been able to communicate messages of God’s love and care.  It can be viewed on iphones or computers.  Some are utilizing radio broadcasts, and so on.  In all, God has allowed cyberspace and the internet to be the channel of blessing that is proclaiming His message.  Though we cannot gather physically, still the work of teaching God’s Word continues!

Practical.  Some beneficial dynamics have emerged, especially for families with children in the home.  These dynamics have a “silver lining” amidst this time of “worry and bleakness” writes Barbara Danza, writer for the Epoch Times April 2-8, 2020).  She goes on to enumerate these blessings that are silver linings and practical in nature:

  • Families are together – sharing meals, having conversations;
  • Kids are free – from heavy schedules, travel, etc.;
  • Calendars are clear – times are given to read, family meals;
  • Divisions are crumbling – we’re all fighting the invisible enemy;
  • Heroes are celebrated – doctors, nurses, delivery people… stepped up;
  • Generosity is shining – people put their talents to good purposes;
  • Spirits are awakening – searching for fundamental truth, peace.

God is using this time for those who will avail themselves to re-bond the family and enhance relationships.  People are reading the Bible; family devotions are being conducted in a non-hurried, natural way.  This is what God intends!

Preparation.  Our world is changing, like it or not.  Shutdowns in the future, such as Covid-19, are not only possible, but probable.  Even people who vividly remember WWII say, “Nothing like this has ever happened in the USA before.”  Could it be that God is preparing the Bride for His Son to be “without spot or wrinkle” from this present world system?  God is saying to His church: Forsake Babylon and “come out of her, My people” (Rev. 18:4).  Is the Holy Spirit showing the church our dependency must be wholly centered on God, rather than that what this natural world offers us?  One thing is for sure; God always prepares His people for His next move.  In our case, God is preparing His people to partner with Him for world harvest.  No doubt this will be the Third Great Awakening which will reach multitudes of people.  Many will be saved and restored globally.  What do we do when the whole world shuts down?  Pray, read Scripture.  Preach and reach out as never before!

Purpose.  It’s difficult to specifically define God’s purpose for experiencing the shutdown from Covid-19.  There are several dynamics to national plagues.  Jesus said “pestilences” would be a sign-marker for the time in which we live.  We all knew plagues were coming; most of us preached about this phenomenon.  We just didn’t know how pestilence would affect our society—or church gatherings, for that matter.  One thing is for sure:  Psalm 91 is now a living reality and rhema word for the church.  Another clear purpose is: God is waking up his sleeping Bride to put on the beautiful garments of praise, holiness and strength (Isa 52:1-2).  Because it is a worldwide pandemic, God is reaching out to the whole world... That none should perish, but that all should come to repentance (II Peter 3:9).  The most searched word on the internet right now is PRAYER.  Let’s all join in spirit to be a part of the Third Great Awakening that is prophesied.  Feed the sheep; care for the orphans and widows; love the brethren; reach out to the LOST, both locally and abroad!
